Furniture Lacquer Vs Furniture Staining

When it comes to wood furniture, it’s important to remember that wood needs a certain finish in order to keep it in tip top condition and to ensure it can withstand everyday use whilst still looking great. Using a professional company like ours to re-polish or stain a piece of furniture can restore the finish of the furniture and can help remove or hide a multitude of marks and stains. This includes the removal of white water marks, removal of grime and the build-up of dirt or any discolouration caused by using cleaning products. It can also help revive worn and dull surfaces and hide any scratches or small imperfections.

Lacquer and stain are two of the most widely used and popular finishing agents that can be used for this and there are advantages and disadvantages to both. Let’s take a closer look at what these are.

Furniture Lacquer Vs Furniture Staining

Furniture lacquer

One of the major benefits of lacquer is its extremely fast drying time. At room temperature, a coat of lacquer will usually dry within about 15 minutes which means multiple coats can be applied quickly and easily. Lacquer also doesn’t require any sanding in between coats as other wood finishing products do which means less work. This means it can provide an extremely quick turnaround time.

Another benefit of lacquer is that it’s extremely tough and will usually last longer than most of the other wood finishes without any flaking or chipping. Lacquer is also incredibly versatile and comes in three different finishes – dull, medium and high-gloss depending on the finish our clients desire.

Lacquer can also be easily removed in future if you decide to further restore or change your furniture again.

Furniture Staining

Furniture stains don’t offer as much protection to wood as lacquer does and are mainly used to change the colour of wood whilst leaving all of the grain and detail of the wood itself still visible.

Stains are also available in all different types of colours, which provides far more choice than lacquer does. You can choose very light stains that will let the wood speak for itself, or much darker stains if you want the pieces to make more of a statement within your home. Of course, the finished colour will be affected by the original colour of the wood below and it’s important to take this into account when making any stain colour choices.
